Itech responded to a Trichloroethylene (TCE) release that occurred within a building. The release was caused when two steel drums containing waste TCE ruptured due to age. The unknown quantity of TCE spilled onto a concrete floor and began seeping through a crack into the soils below. The release was noticed when vapours built up inside the building to a point where safety was questioned. Itech attended the site, over packed the drums and began the cleanup. Initially, several test holes were drilled through the concrete to access the soils below. A consultant collected samples analyzing for vapours. This helped to determine how large of an area needed to be excavated. Once this was determined, concrete was removed and soils were excavated. Due to the strong vapours of the TCE, Itech staff had to wear respirators equipped with multi-gas cartridges, tyvek suits and gloves. In total 25 tonnes of impacted soil was removed for treatment.
